Are things feeling off? Mercury is in retrograde!

Posted by admin

I’m sure you’ve heard the term, but what does it mean?  To us, it supposedly means that all forms of communication (internet, mail & e-mail, general back-and-forth), travel, appointments, etc. go catawampus.  It’s generally a bad time to schedule surgery, go on trips, or try to communicate clearly to coworkers and loved ones.  Unresolved problems from the past return and cars break down.  It’s best just to understand that it’s happening and ride it out.   Schedule things around the Mercury retrograde calendar – interviews, court dates, road trips, you get the picture.   Mercury went into retrograde on April 18 and doesn’t straighten out until May 12th.  It will be full-speed ahead by May 28th.  Also, Mercury goes retrograde 4 times this year vs. its normal 3.   Brace yourself.

Scientifically it means this:  A planet is described as retrograde when it appears to be moving backwards through the zodiac. According to modern science, this traditional concept arises in the illusory planetary motion created by the orbital rotation of the earth with relation to other planets in our solar system. It’s a bit like travelling on the road watching another car beside you: when the other car slows down, or you speed up, it looks as though the other car is moving backwards. Planets are never actually retrograde or stationary, they just seem that way due to this cosmic shadow-play.

Here is a cool website explaining the phenomenon.

I keep a Mercury retrograde calendar nearby.  Strange that I didn’t realize this one was creeping up on me…must be that my routine is in flux due to job changes, cruising the high seas, and all.  I have felt SO off this week!  Now I know it isn’t just my “sea legs.”   According to the link above, the planet Mercury rules thinking and perception.  That explains a lot.  But also be aware that the shift in energy will affect people differently since we all have different energies at work in our lives.  Some people may not even notice the forces at work.  I think I’m really feeling it this time since I am in a transitory place in my life.

Yes, I know astrology isn’t a proven science.  But I believe in a lot of things that I can’t see or prove.  Plus, some very intelligent people over the centuries have studied the stars & planets and astrology didn’t develop out of nowhere.  The pull of the moon affects the tides, so why couldn’t other planets affect our physical being, as well?   I’d rather be aware.

Mercury retrograde periods for 2010:

  • December, 27 2009 - January 16, 2010
  • April 18, 2010 - May 12, 2010
  • August 21, 2010 - September 13, 2010
  • December 11, 2010 - December 30, 2010

Note that the affect can be felt approximately 3 days before and three days after the dates, and often, it is in the period directly before and after when the disruption is most fierce.

I had better postpone my interview next week.
